Founded in 1833, Dubai is the most picturesque emirate in the UAE. With a population of 2.1 million, it is well known for its rich multicultural heritage. In less than 40 years, Dubai has metamorphosed from a small pearl fishing village to one of the most ambitious, astounding and dynamic cities of today. The world’s tallest tower, man-made islands, seven-star hotels, largest shopping malls (Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Wafi Mall, etc.) fascinating heritage attractions and a booming business economy make Dubai an exciting cosmopolitan city.
Dubai has set standards for social ethics and mutual respect. Citizens, residents, and visitors follow and respect the Emirati culture, religion, and lifestyle. The conduct and dress code in Dubai reflects the Islamic values of the country which is ingrained in a conservative lifestyle, unlike other western nations. Public decency and morality laws are strictly enforced across the country.
The city of Dubai takes the well-being of its residents and visitors seriously, hailed for its impeccable safety record; the people enjoy a lifestyle with no fear of crime. Unlike other highly populated cities, Dubai has set a high standard of safety with strict policing and rigorous punishment for offenders. UAE is also ranked first globally for treating women with respect. Violent crime and homicide records in Dubai are one of the lowest in the world. In fact, YouGov surveys show that 97 percent of UAE residents feel very safe.
Dubai is also known to be the region’s cleanest city. The Dubai Municipality works round the clock combing all the streets of filth and debris and constantly augments their efforts by launching awareness campaigns among the residents to reinforce the culture of proper waste disposal and recycling initiatives and thereby maintains very high standards of cleanliness in the city.
Dubai plays host to several professional sporting events, annually. Established in 1993, the Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships has consistently been hosting one of the world’s best professional tennis championships for both men & women in Dubai. This tournament has won the ATP World Tour 500 award 10 times in 11 years.
Dubai is home to the Omega Dubai Desert Classic – the annual professional golf tournament. This event has been part of the European Tour schedule since 1989 and attracts some of the finest golfers in the world. Ernie Els has earned his greatest achievements in Dubai and has won the Desert Classic thrice.
The Dubai World Cup, considered as the richest day for horse racing in the world, takes place every year at the superlative Meydan racecourse in Dubai. Horse racing saw its beginnings in the emirate in October 1981. The Dubai Racing Club was established in early 1992, which followed the official opening at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse.
In 2010 the Dubai World Cup was introduced at the iconic Meydan Grandstand and racecourse to the equine racing world. This has become the new home for the Dubai World Cup and is the world’s largest integrated racing facility with a seating capacity of over 60,000. Adjoining it is the 285 elegantly appointed suites of the Meydan Hotel.
The racing season begins in November every year. The highlight of the racing season is the Dubai World Cup Carnival that starts in January and features some of the biggest names in the racing world.
